The Devils Folly. 19th C.
Backgammon has been banned a number of times in Britain throughout history due to its association with gambling. - It was nicknamed "The Devils Folly" by Cardinal Wolsey and he demanded all boards be burnt. - This is where the folding board, cunningly disguised as a book was born. - Here we have a rough survivor, beautifully aged, ripped, battered and bruised. Well played and then forgotten. - Embossed leather chess board on the outside with the faint markings of 'Vol.2' down the spine of the "book" that when opened reveals the backgammon board, lightly faded with beautiful detailing to the leather. - This is more of a display piece, an item to tell story of the history of the game and it's rips and scars tell that story in abundance. - Rough dimension... H38.W.42. D.4. CM (open) H.38.W.21.D.8. CM (closed) - Note: Like all antiques, this item has many age related marks and in some parts missing full parts of its leather clad (see photos).
